NATO øger bevogtning i Østersøen

NATO reagerer nu på de gentagne angreb på undersøisk infrastruktur i Østersøen, ved at sende en flåde på ti skibe på havet, for at overvåge skibstrafikken og beskytte vigtige undersøiske installationer. Samtidig bringes nye AI-værktøjer i anvendelse.

Operationen starter allerede i denne uge, og vil mindst fortsætte tre måneder frem.

Ifølge det finske statsmedie YLE vil skibene positionere sig tæt på energi- og datakabler. Formålet er at virke afskrækkende og øge risikoen for at blive afsløret i mulig sabotage. NATO har dog ikke mulighed for at gribe proaktivt ind overfor skibe der befinder sig i internationalt farvand.

Samtidig har landene i JEF-forsvarssamarbejdet meddelt, at de vil øge deres overvågning af undersøisk infrastruktur i Østersøen ved hjælp af AI.

Under navnet Nordic Warden går operationen ud på at følge mistænkelige skibe i realtid.

"Nordic Warden vil hjælpe med at beskytte mod både bevidste sabotagehandlinger og tilfælde af ekstrem skødesløshed, som vi har set forårsage skade på undersøiske kabler", siger John Healey, der er britiske forsvarsminister.

Storbritannien leder JEF-samarbejdet (Joint Expeditionary Force), der ud over Storbritannien tæller Danmark, Estland, Finland, Island, Letland, Litauen, Holland, Norge, Sverige.
