17 savnes efter forlis i Rødehavet

Sytten besætningsmedlemmer savnes, efter at det 5.600 tons egyptisk fragtskib Ibn al-Battuta er sank i Rødehavet, kort tid efter at det forlod havnen i Abu Dhunaima nær den egyptiske havneby Safaga.

Det er endnu uvist hvad der ligger bag forliset, der ifølge de egyptiske myndigheder skete 35 sømil fra land.

To skibe og flere helikoptere deltager i eftersøgningen, hvor det indtil nu er lykkedes at redde ni besætningsmedlemmer, mens tre er fundet omkommmet og 14 fortsat savnes. De savnede besætningsmedlemmer kommer fra Sudan, Indien og Pakistan.

Skibet havde kort inden forliset forladt havnen i Abu Dhunaima med en last af silicium der skulle fragtes til De Forenede Arabiske Emirater, oplyser skibets ejer.

I februar 2006 sank en færge som var på vej til Safaga fra Saudi-Arabien. Dengang druknede 1.000 passagerer, et af de værste maritime ulykker i nyere tid.

I 1991 sank en anden egyptiske færge i Rødehavet på vej fra Jeddah til Safaga. Dengang omkom 500 mennesker.
