Eleonora Mærsk redder 221 flygtninge

Eleonora Mærsk blev torsdag omdirigeret af Maltas Rescue Coordination Centrefor at hjælpe en fiskerbåd med 221 flygtninge. Containerskibet samlede flygtningene op. De syriske flygtninge, her iblandt mange kvinder og børn, er nu bragt til Catania på Sicilien.

Fiskerbåden kom i nød omkring 285 sømil øst for Malta. Eleonora Mærsk, der var i nærheden, blev bedt om at afvige fra sin kurs mod Malta for at undersøge sagen. Med udsigt til værre vejrforhold med vindstyrke op til 7 blev det besluttet at tage flygtningene om bord.

Efter redningsaktionen satte Leonora i første omgang atter kursen mod Malta. Flygtningene ville dog ikke overføres til maltesiske fartøjer, men ville til Italien. Efter drøftelser mellem de maltesiske og italienske myndigheder, blev Leonora Mærsk derfor dirigeret til Catania.
