Danish reflections on maritime initiatives
SHIPPING: The Danish Shipowners' Association has analysed a set of 17 EU maritime initiatives or subjects, and for each of these included a series of concrete recommendations.
In January 2009, the European Commission adopted the Maritime Transport Strategy 2018. This document contains positive, ambitious and concrete strategic goals and recommendations on subjects such as competition, quality shipping and maritime know-how.
The strategy was formulated and launched at a turbulent time, when the impact and reach of the global economic crisis was yet to be fully comprehended.
Several indicators show that in most segments we are now past the worst of the crisis. Danish shipping companies generally weathered the storm and are preparing for the upcoming consolidation phase.
However the market situation is still affected by a great deal of uncertainty and externalities like financial difficulties, large newbuilding programmes etc. The general economic situation in Europe and in the US also still have the potential of delaying the upturn.
With this document, the Danish Shipowners' Associations wants to address a number of objectives and strategic goals set out in the 2018 Strategy - as well as to identify and propose concrete solutions to existing and potential challenges for European shipping.
The shipowners have analysed a set of 17 maritime initiatives or subjects, and for each of these included a series of concrete recommendations. When comparing the strategic goals set out in the 2018 Strategy with our recommendations, we are pleased to see that common goals in general terms are shared by the institutions and industry.
It is the shipowners hope, that this publication will provide food for thought and inspiration to decision-makers and EU stakeholders at large. They trust that the readers will find the reading of this document both fruitful and enlightening.
