Antwerpen Europas næststørste havneby

Målt på omsætningen i 2014 er den belgiske havneby Antwerpen nu rykket op på andenpladsen på listen over de største europæiske havne kun overgået af Hamburg, om end de to havnebyer ligger utrolig tæt på hinanden målt på mængden af container over kaj.

I alt blev der omsat 198,8 millioner ton gods i 2014, hvilket er 4,2 procent mere end i 2013. Tallene for Hamburg er ikke offentligt endnu, men Hamburgs omsætning i de første ni måneder af 2014 var som tidligere omtalt i Maritime Danmark 110 millioner ton gods over kaj. Containeromsætningen var på 7,4 millioner TEU.

Væksten i universalhavnen Antwerpen hænger sammen med en bedre infrastruktur, modernisering af havnen og containerfaciliteterne og sidst, men ikke mindst – uddybning af floden Schelde. Det betyder, at selv skibe i Triple –E-klassen nu kan anløbe havnen. Inden for det næste døgn anløber ”Morten Mærsk” således havnen. Skibet er for første gang i Europa og foretog sin turnaround i Bremerhaven og Wilhelmshaven.
