World’s largest wind turbine blade
OFFSHORE: The Danish company SSP Technology has created a 83.5 meter long and 36 ton heavy turbine blade. SSP Technology, located in Kirkeby, Svendborg, planned for the world's largest wind turbine blade to depart on Wednesday evening, but shipment was postponed by a day.
"It’s so massive that only the Fraunhofer Institute in Bremerhaven in Germany have the conditions that are large enough to test it. It’s also too large to be transported through the Elbtunnel in Hamburg, and therefore we must send it by ship from Esbjerg", says the proud CEO of SSP Technology, Flemming Sørensen.
The blade of the mill has been developed in great secrecy during the past 15 months. The customer is Samsung in South Korea, who are planning a large offshore wind farm. The turbine's rotor diameter is at 171.2 meters.
In comparison, the Siemens 6 MW offshore wind turbine is being tested in Østerild with blades of 75 meters. The V164-8.0 MW turbine, which Vestas is developing, has wings that are 80 meters long and a rotor diameter of 164 meters.
