Spanien får milliarderstatning for oliespild

Onsdag tildelte en domstol i La Coruña den spanske regering i alt 1,9 milliarder USD i erstatning for olieudslippet fra tankskibet Prestige, der brækkede over og sank i 2002, da det blev nægtet adgang til at søge nødhavn, da skibet kom i vanskeligheder under en storm ud for Galicien.

London Steam Ship Owners Owners Mutual Insurance Association (The London Club) skal betale en milliard USD af beløbet, og rederiet Mare Shipping og IOPC Funds resten ad de 1,9 milliarder USD, ifølge TheTelegraph.

Olieudslippet ved forliset forurenede tusinder kilometer af kystlinje og mere end tusind strande på den spanske, franske og portugisiske kyst, og var årsag til stor skade for hele regionens fiskere og den tilhørende fiskeindustri. Det var den største miljøkatastrofe i Spaniens historie, med en samlet effekt på cirka seks milliarder USD.

Retten s afgørelse i onsdags er ikke endelig med hensyn til erstatningens størrelse. De enkelte skadelidte lokaliteter langs kysten har stadig mulighed for at få godkendt erstatninger fra enten rederiet eller dets forsikringsselskaber.

Den spanske regering er blevet frikendt for ansvar i forbindelse med den græske tanker Prestige’s forlis i 2002, der førte til den værste miljøkatastrofe i Spaniens historie, da 77.000 tons råolie fra skibet forurenede de nordspanske kyster.
