Nordic tanker rescues 19 people
On Monday Nord Nightingale, which is owned by the shipping company Norden and included in the Norient Product Pool, rescued19 people from a crash-landed offshore helicopter out of Shetland . No one was injured in the crash landing or the subsequent rescue operation.
The helicopter was on its way from Aberdeen to an oil rig 86 miles from Aberdeen, when it was forced to make an emergency landing.
Two minutes after the emergency landing was made, the helicopter began to emit distress signals which were captured on board the Nord Nightingale.
The captain on board the ship immediately change course to approach the helicopter. During the next 45 minutes the crew managed to bring all the 19 crash landed people into safety on board the ship.
After a short stay on board the Nord Nightingale the rescued were hoisted up in two rescue helicopters that brought them ashore.
The helicopter is of the sort Super Puma which is among the most used in the North Sea. In May a Super Puma with 14 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing 30 miles from Aberdeen. In April 2009, 16 were killed when a Super Puma crashed in the North Sea after being hit by problems with the gearbox.
