New Smyril Line service opened in Esbjerg
SHIPPING: Smyril Line's new service between Esbjerg, the Faroe Islands and Iceland was officially opened on Saturday with great festivity on the Atlantic quay in Esbjerg. Three Faroe ministers participated along with a series of invited guests from Iceland and the Faroe islands in the opening.
Norröna is a large and beautiful ship - holds 1500 passengers and 130 trailers - and is expected to have great importance for Esbjerg port with large amounts of cargo over quay and for Esbjerg city with a large turnover.
Many passengers from the rest of Denmark and north western Europe are expected to use the service via Esbjerg to the Faroe Islands and Iceland - and many of the Faroese going south.
The shipping company Smyril Line is handling passenger sales, while the cargo company Smyril Blue Water is handling cargo - fish going south and all kinds of general cargo going north.
The service will during the three summer months - June, July and August - continue to call at Hanstholm instead of Esbjerg, since two weekly return trips can be made from here and thereby take care of the many tourists visiting the north Atlantic islands in this period.
