New agreement to continue rail freight
SHIPPING: DFDS has signed an agreement with rail-way companies Lithuanian State Railways and the Baltic Port Rail Mukran GmbH for their ro-pax-rail line between Sassnitz/Mukran and Klaipeda.
According to the agreement, part of the railway capacity on the line will be at the disposal of the railway companies. The line is unique, as it is the only connection across the sea between Germany and the Baltic States that is customised to transport rail freight.
“We are very pleased with this cooperation, which means that we can offer customers continued service on the route,” says Route Director Samuil Vindergauz.
In the near future, we hope to benefit even more from this contract as the Lithuanian State Railways is already considering opening direct shuttle routes between Lithuania and Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and China.
This would extend the market considerably and would increase the importance of rail ferry services out of Sassnitz.
“A railway service provides opportunities for creating an effective intermodal logistics chain between the East and the West to benefit our customers on both sides”, says Vindergauz.
