Liverpool Seaways released today
SHIPPING: Liverpool Seaways did not do well during an unannounced safety inspection on Wednesday in Karlshamn, Sweden. The Swedish maritime authorities chose to detain the ship until a number of deficiencies were brought into order
Unfortunately, among the deficiencies were the evacuation ladders (which have been on the ship since it was built) that proved to be four metres too short (18 metres instead of 22).
Evacuation ladders are absolutely not off-the-shelf products. They had to be manufactured in Holland and could therefore not be on the ship before Friday morning, so the ship could be released by the Swedish Authorities and be ready for departure on Friday at 18:00.
"This is very unfortunate for our passenger and freight customers who were delayed, and naturally the safety standards on ALL our ships must be of the highest quality. Therefore, already on Friday meetings took place between various managers responsible for the ship management in order to review and improve safety routines and processes, so we can avoid similar situations in the future," says DFDS CEO Niels Smedegaard.
