Danish expedition out to find Hans Hedtoft
SHIPPING: This summer, a Danish expedition will sail off to the waters south of Kap Farvel to look for the wreck of the Greenland ship Hans Hedtoft, which sank on its maiden voyage 50 years ago on the 30th of January 1959.
"We are currently negotiating the financing of the expedition. Should this fall into place, we will in the time period from the 15th of July to the15th of August be investigating the area in which we are most likely to find Hans Hedtoft ", navigator and engineer Claude Enoch explains to Kristeligt Dagblad.
The Hans Hedtoft expedition has been under preparation by the Danish diving firm No Limits Diving through a number of years, but it has so far not been possible to raise the app. two million DKK to cover the expenses of the trip. Now, the Danish adventurers expect that the marking of the 50 years passed since the shipwreck will encourage potential sponsors.
As the wreck lies at a depth of 1700 meters, it is impossible for divers to get close but the hope is, that it will be possible to locate the wreck and send down under water robots and cameras.
Claude Enoch has a theory that Hans Hedtoft sank due a constructional error and he hopes that footage from the wreck will help uncover the truth as to whether this is in fact the case or not.
"I would like to film the sides of the ship to see if there is any evidence that they may have hit an iceberg or if it looks more like the weldings have come undone," says Enoch.
