Bawat gets ballast water system approved
The Danish company Bawat A/S, which was established in 2011 with the aim of developing technologies for ballast water treatment, has developed a system that has successfully completed all the tests imposed by the IMO, as documented by DNV-GL.
"We are overflowing with expectations. We look forward to meeting our potential customers in the market," says Kim Diederichsen, Director of Bawat A/S, which is currently exhibiting at Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center.
Bawats ballast water system is just about to enter the market. Currently, the final approval is being treated in the Danish Maritime Authority. The system is innovative, as the treatment of ballast water can be carried out at sea. This saves time and money compared to a so-called in-line system, where the processing is done in the harbor. Additionally, there are no filters, UV irradiation or chemicals involved in the process. Maintenance of the system is also extremely limited.
The technology behind the system is to remove the oxygen content of the water and most importantly pasteurization. The excess heat from the ship is being used in the process, helping to reduce costs.
"Our system is competitive on all parameters. The handling system is simple and therefore easy for the crew to handle it on board the ships, while there is almost no maintenance," says Kim Diederichsen.
The launch of Bawats ballast water system coincides with the fact that it becomes mandatory to have a ballast water system on board.
Bawats system is targeting tankers and bulk carriers, which represents more than a third of the total global fleet. It also protects the system against corrosion in the tanks containing ballast water, which helps to prolong the life of the ship.
