Swedish coaster still on solid rock

SHIPPING: The Swedish coaster Sternö, which on Sunday night went aground at Mörkö, has not yet been pulled free. The Swedish Coast Guard has sent divers down to examine the hull and no signs of oil spill have been recorded.

Sternö was on its way from Lake Mälaren with a cargo consisting of cereals as it for unknown reasons ran aground south of Mörkö. In addition to the load of grain there were around 12,000 liters of fuel on board.

"We believe that the situation is stable. There is no oil in the water and the vessel is lying still," says Lars Matsson, incident commander from the Swedish Coast Guard.

Sterno is 1,372 DWT, sails under the Swedish flag and is owned by Fiducia Shipping.
