Sømand dræbt efter skib blev ramt af bølge

De canadiske myndigheder er i gang med at undersøge et skib, der blev ramt af en voldsom bølge ud for i Nordatlanten ca. 320 sømil ud for Nova Scotia, som dræbte et besætningsmedlem og kvæstede tre andre. Ulykken skete på det den 39.200 dwt. store bulker, Giulia I i lørdags.

Skibet var på vej fra Norfolk, Virginia, til Afrika, men blev tvunget til at gå i havn i Halifax i Canada, hvor en inspektør fra International Transport Workers Organisation talte med besætningen.

“De var selvfølgelig meget traumatiserede efter hændelsen og vi arbejder på at skaffe hjælp til dem her i Halifax,” siger Karl Risser, fra organisationen.

Skibet er ifølge de foreliggende oplysninger ejet af italienske Venice Shipping and Logistics og under management af Falcon Maritime i København.

De canadiske transportmyndigheder er nu i gang med en havnestatskontrol af skibet for at sikre, at det overholder Maritime Labour Convention og kravene i forhold til at sikre besætningens velbefindende og rettigheder.

“Myndighederne undersøger også skibet for skader og vil sikre, at der er et tilstrækkeligt antal besætningsmedlemmer om bord i forhold til den gældende lovgivning,” hedder det videre i en udtalelse.

Skibet vil forblive i Halifax, indtil undersøgelserne er gennemført.
