New pirate attack on Maersk ship
SHIPPING: Somali pirates attacked once again a Maersk ship in the Aden Bay on Friday night. This time it was on the 4.300 TEU Maersk Virginia, which just like Maersk Alabama is owned by Maersk's American daughter company Maersk Line Ltd.
The attack on Maersk Virginia happened after the pirates had tried to hijack the 35.300 DWT Greek bulk carrier Maria K in vain. The pirates fired hand weapons and grenades against the Greek ship, but were not able to board. That is why the pirates gave up and went for the Maersk ship instead.
But before the pirates reached the Danish ship, the Canadian warship HMCS Winniepeg and several helicopters reached the position, which made the pirates withdraw form the area.
It is yet unknown whether the pirates fired any shots at Maersk Virginia, which with its crew of 19 men was on its way to Salalah in Oman after having gone through the Suez Canal.
