MAN Diesel axes 180 jobs
MARITIME INDUSTRY: MAN Diesel is sacking 180 employees due to the decline in order holdings. The downturn in the shipping industry will cost positions at MAN Diesel both in Frederikshavn and Holeby, Lolland.
The axe will strike Frederikshavn the hardest, where MAN Diesel will discharge 170 employees. Of these, 140 are paid by the hour and 30 are salaried employees. Site Manager Poul Knudsgaard states that MAN Diesel is affected in both order holdings and in intake of new orders due to the financial crisis.
"In addition, we are decreasing home production of two-stroke engines in Frederiskhavn during 2009, as the production no longer is favourable", says Poul Knudsgaard .
Knudsgaard emphasises however, that it is an adjustment to the current market conditions that is in question, and that there are still many plans for the Frederikshavn department, which at the moment holds 1,100 employees, also in the future.
In Holeby the round of sackings will cost the jobs of ten salaried employees.
