Maersk to take on Dong Energy
OFFSHORE: Maersk has announced, that it will sell 1 billion cubic metres of natural gas through a newly established trading firm. Doing so, Maersk goes into direct competition with its long time partner Dong Energy.
Since 1984 the state-owned Dong Energy has been the middleman for Maersk's Oil and Gas unit, but now the company will cut out the middleman by taking the product straight to the market itself.
Torben Norgaard, who will head the newly established Maersk International Gas Marketing, told Danish daily Borsen that by going into competition with Dong, Maersk could see higher profits and could potentially sell more gas than at present.
