Færge med 1.200 i brand i Rødehavet

En jordansk færge med over 1.200 passagerer om bord brød torsdag morgen i brand kort efter at den havde forladt Aqaba med kurs mod Nuweiba i Egypten. Alle passagerer er nu bragt i sikkerhed og ilden slukket.

Branden, der brød ud ved 8.30-tiden, meldes at være slukket omkring ved 11-tiden.

De fleste passagerer var ægyptiske gæstearbejdere på vej hjem for at fejre en muslimsk højtid. Ud over passagererne var der fem lastbiler om bord på færgen.

Den 28 år gamle færge Pella er ejet af AB Maritime, et rederi der er ejet i fællesskab af Jordan, Ægypten og Irak.

I 2006 omkom mere end 1.000 mennesker, da en ægyptisk færge brød i brand og sank I Rødehavet.
