DFDS ro/ro be delivered during autumn
Construction of the first of the two ro / ro ships to DFDS by the German P + S Werft in Stralsund has been resumed. It is now expected to be ready for delivery during autumn. The second of the two sister ships will be delivered in the beginning of 2014.
The final signatures on the agreement, which makes it possible to build the two ships, are now in place. Hence the work on constructing the two ships is in full action.
One of the two ships is almost finished. It has been waiting in dry dock since August last year while the yard has fought for its survival. The yard continued operations are now secured with a deficit guarantee from the German government.
The first steel for the two ships were cut back in May 2011, but construction came to a halt when the yard went into receivership last summer.
The new vessels will, in addition to sailing for DFDS, be part of the Danish-German ARK project that Denmark started in 2003 to meet NATO requirements for member countries. The project has capacity to transport military equipment and manpower around in the world.
With the two new specially equipped ships the ARK project comes to a total of five vessels that on short notice can be made available for Denmark, Germany and other NATO countries, who need large transport capacity or for emergency situations.
