Containerrederierne tabte 5,6 mia kr i 2011

22 af de største containerrederier tabte sidste år tilsammen 5,6 milliarder kroner på driften, mod en samlet gevinst på 12,1 milliarder kroner i 2010. Tabet sidste år er dog langt mindre end driftstabet i 2009 der nåede helt op på 13,4 milliarder kroner

MSC, der er verdens næststørste containerrederi, indgår dog ikke i beregningen - der er foretaget af Alphaliner - da de ikke offentliggjort sit årsregnskab endnu. Kun fire rederier, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, OOCL og SITC, havde overskud på driften sidste år.

De 22 rederier havde i gennemsnit en negativ driftsmarginal på 6 procent mod en positiv driftsmarginal på 7 procent. i 2010

Ifølge Alphaliner tegner Cosco, med et driftstab på 1 milliard dollar, sig for hele 17,5 procent af det samlede driftstab i branchen, mens danske Maersk Line kom ud af året med et driftstab på 483 millioner dollar. Maersk Lines størrelse betyder dog, at driftstabet kun svarer til en negativ driftsmarginal på 1,9 procent.
