BC Ferries chooses IRON Pump solution for vital lifeline in British Columbia
BC Ferries and IRON Pump have entered into an agreement for a new collaboration and the delivery of specific pump solutions.
Following a constructive and technically focused dialogue with BC Ferries, IRON Pump has entered into an agreement to deliver a complete pump solution for the MV Baynes Sound Connector, the only cable ferry in BC Ferries’ fleet, operating on one of the world’s longest cable‑pulled routes.
The agreement includes two CNLe 50‑40/160 pumps and two SLIMPOWER 50‑80‑100 ejectors, which will support essential operational and safety functions on board.
This delivery places IRON Pump as a strategic partner for one of North America’s largest ferry operators and demonstrates our ability to support projects even when they take place over 7,500 km away, in some of the world’s most geographically challenging regions.
BC Ferries: A vital lifeline in British Columbia
BC Ferries is a major player in passenger and vehicle ferry operations and plays a critical role in the transportation infrastructure along Canada’s west coast. They connect local communities, support the regional economy, and ensure safe and reliable transportation serving coastal British Columbia, including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and multiple island communities.
The ferries operate on routes that range from large transportation hubs to smaller, locally based connections.
It is precisely in this category that we find the unique ferry Baynes Sound Connector.
MV Baynes Sound Connector: An engineering achievement
The ferry sails between Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island and Denman Island West, a short but crucial connection for the local community.
What makes the vessel unique is its propulsion system:
It is BC Ferries’ only cable‑pulled ferry.
The route stretches approximately 2 km (1,961 meters), making it the longest cable‑ferry connection in the world.
The ferry is powered by two guide cables and one drive cable, replacing traditional propellers and making operations both more energy‑ and fuel‑efficient. With a length of 78.5 meters and capacity for 45 cars and up to 150 passengers and crew, it is a relatively compact ferry.
IRON Pump on board: From fire fighting to operational reliability
This is not the first time IRON Pump has delivered equipment to Baynes Sound Connector, where our QV 2‑4/300 pumps already play a central role on board. Our presence will be expanded when the new pumps and ejectors are installed as part of the latest order.
This is taking place in early 2026.
The new order expands our presence on board and strengthens operational efficiency:
- The CNLe 50‑40/160 pumps
These centrifugal pumps have been selected for their high reliability, efficiency, and ability to handle demanding maritime environments—crucial on a ferry with a specialized propulsion system. - The SLIMPOWER 50‑80‑100 ejectors
The ejectors provide a flexible and robust solution for liquid handling, where compact design and minimal movement are essential on a cable ferry, where space and stability are key parameters.
A growing partnership
The agreement with BC Ferries underscores IRON Pump’s position as a reliable pump partner within specialized maritime applications. With the delivery of both centrifugal pumps and SLIMPOWER ejectors to MV Baynes Sound Connector, we will strengthen operational stability on this important route.
