Australien ratificerer ballastvandkonvention

Den australske regering har besluttet at ratificere den internationale ballastvandskonvention, der bringer landet i overensstemmelse med globale forsendelsesstandarder. Beslutningen vil øge marin biosikkerhed i Australiens maritime miljø og godkende fælles standarder for ballastvand.

”Den internationale skibsindustri er villig til at bære de høje omkostninger ved at installere kompatible ballastvandsbehandlingssystemer for at fjerne risikoen for overførsel af marine skadedyr gennem ballastvand. Vi forventer, at denne reducerede risiko vil blive anerkendt af regeringen ved en reduktion af internationale fartøjsgebyrer for overholdelse af biosikkerhed”, siger Rod Nairn, Shipping Australia.

Højkommissær for Storbritannien, Alexander Downer underskrev protokollen i går i London, ifølge Maritime Industry Australia Limited (MIAL).

Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC), som vil give yderligere havmiljøbeskyttelse, forventes at træde i kraft den 8. september 2017.
