Thrane contracts on satellite equipment
MARITIME INDUSTRY: The Danish electronics company Thrane & Thrane has entered in cooperation with American KVH Industries on the introduction of new products for the commercial maritime Ku band market.
Through the new cooperation, Thrane & Thrane will be able to offer a global Ku band solution faster, which is especially asked for by the commercial fleet. In addition, the agreement makes it possible for Thrane & Thrane to develop their own solutions based on KVH's Ku band network.
The first deliveries to Thrane & Thrane's clients are already expected around the 1st of March 2009. The solution by Thrane & Thrane is based on KVH's well-known Ku
band system, that includes both terminals and antennas.
Furthermore, the solution will use KVH's existing mini VSAT Broadband service, enabling data transfers up to 2 Mbps.
Thrane & Thrane expects to reach a turnover in Ku band in the size of 40 million DKK already in the financial year 2009/2010 and that it increases the following years.
The contract with KVH is building on many years of cooperation, during which Thrane & Thrane has delivered satellite communication equipment such as mini-M, Fleet and Fleet Broadband to be sold under KVH.
Similarly, the new Ku band solution will be marketed under Thrane & Thrane's maritime brand Sailor.
Today, approximately 5,500 maritime terminals for Ku band have been installed. The number rises by app. 1,500 annually but the growth rate is expected to increase. The current client price for a terminal is typically around $ 40 to 60,000.
