News underway on Port State Control
MARITIME SERVICE: In the future, the Danish Maritime Authority will publish updated news on Port State Control (PSC) inspections of Danish ships abroad. Here they will present the deficiencies, non-conformities and trends identified at PSC inspections.
A ship is detained in a foreign port because its Oily Water Separator (OWS) does not function. It turns out that the engineer officer does not have any knowledge whatsoever about the OWS system and, therefore, has not be able to demonstrate or explain how the system works.
This is just one example of a detention. But precisely OWS and related systems as well as emergency fire pumps are items on which many countries focus and, of course, they must be in order. Consequently, all engineer officers should be thoroughly instructed in and get a possibility of testing the OWS system on board as often as possible, for example well in advance of port arrivals. In case of deficiencies, they must be reported immediately to the local port authorities and the Danish Maritime Authority. This is, of course, also the case if accidents occur or other deficiencies of importance to the ship’s safety are found.
The shipowners have requested that the Danish Maritime Authority publishes news items on PSC inspections, and the DMA hope that the news will help eliminate deficiencies and prevent detentions for the benefit of the industry and Denmark as a maritime nation.
The aim is to get better and to avoid deficiencies and detentions.
