Introduction to the Labour Convention
SHIPPING SERVICE: On the Danish Seahealth website you can now find an introduction to the Maritime Labour Convention (ILO/MLC). The aim of the convention is to modernize and improve shipboard working and employment conditions at the global level.
On the website, there is an introduction to the content of the convention's five chapters, a look back at the origins of the convention and not least, where we are now and what will happen in future.
Denmark has ratified MLC, 2006. Still several countries need to ratify before the convention can take effect. The most recent indications from ILO are that the remaining eight countries will ratify the convention before year-end 2012 and that all requirements therefore will be met before the New Year. This review of the contents of the convention and its consequences for shipowners and seafarers is intended to give a full overview of the implementation process.
Denmark has had to make changes to seven laws as a result of the convention and with them, several draft ministerial Orders to follow up on the legislative changes. The website contains all the relevant links to the legislation and Orders that will be important for seafarers and shipowners. There are also links to the convention and its appendices. Finally, there is a FAQs section on the convention from ILO.
In conclusion, on the website we also indicate how you can make use of SEAHEALTH in the process of implementing MLC, 2006 at the level of the shipowner/ship.
