Gertsen & Olufsen receives large order
MARITIME INDUSTRY: Gertsen & Olufsen has made an agreement with the government owned Chinese shipping company, China Shipping, which means that eight Chinese ore carriers of 300.000 DWT each will leave Dalia Shipyard with vibration compensators from the Danish marine specialist.
"It is a groundbreaking order for us", says sales manager Jens Ulrik Nielsen of Gertsen & Olufsen.
"First of all, we have won the order in competition with our keen, Japanese and very expensive competitor, secondly, it is our first project with the fuel saving large drilling engines. The order affirms our leading position on the world market of vibration compensators", says Jens Ulrik Nielsen.
The ships is a series of the so-called VLOCs (Very Large Oil Carriers) which is specially designed bulk carriers for transporting iron ore and will be in service between China, Australia and India. They are 310 meters long, 55 meters wide and draw 25 meters fully loaded.
"There is a clear trend in container, tanker and bulk markets of ship constructors reducing the number of cylinders and increasing the number of drills to save fuel and CO2 discharge. Nevertheless, the fewer cylinders and the larger number of drills increase the number of vibrations and you have to compensate for that, or the actual ship construction will be alarmingly big", says Jens Ulrik Nielsen.
The compensators are produced in Denmark through a number of subcontractors, installed at Gertsen & Olufsen in Horsholm and will be tested thoroughly at DTU among other places.
