Frederikshavn expecting scrapping boom
PORTS: 200 new jobs is the forecast if Frederikshavn Harbour succeeds in getting obsolete ships and oil rigs into the harbor for scrapping. So says port director Mikkel Seedorff Sørensen, who will co-host a seminar in Frederikshavn on 25th of October on new business opportunities for the port.
Seerdorgg Sørensen believes in this forecast, as scrapping ships on beaches in the Third World is not an acceptable solution and oil companies need a greener and ethically acceptable way to deal with weary platforms.
The Port Director's assessment is based on the fact that there are currently about 600 platforms in the North Sea that at one time or another have become so old or worn that they must be broken up.
Plans are closely linked to the forthcoming enlargement of the port of Frederikshavn. The port depth will be increased from eight to 13 meters, and the longest piers are now 300 meters long instead of the current 200 meters. The entrance will be widened and extended from 95 meters to 150 meters. This makes it possible to tow the major platforms into the harbor.
Today, there are already several companies at the port of Frederikshavn, working with recycling of ships. The ships are cut up and reused in different branches of industry in an environmentally sound manner, including in the steel and automotive industries.
