Flawed conditions at container factory
MARITIME INDUSTRY: An impartial investigation has revealed a series of flawed conditions at A.P. Moller-Maersk's container factory in southern China. Maersk has now taken action to correct the flaws.
Maersk manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Annette Stube says that the middle managers are part of the problems on the factory.
"Unfortunately, it appears that we have not been able to trust the Chinese middle managers completely and that they are part of the problem. But that is not an excuse. Ultimately, it is the top management's responsibility", says Annette Stube to Ritzau.
The factory was affected by strikes and riots twice last year.
After critique of conditions at the factory by the Hong Kong based campaign organisation Globalizatio Monitor, A.P. Moller-Maersk began an impartial investigation. It showed that 86 per cent of the factory employees are happy about condition at the factory, and that they trust the Danish top management. But the investigation also showed A.P. Moller-Maersk that something is very wrong at the factory.
A.P. Moller-Maersk has employed a series of changes in human resources and work environment to give the employees better working conditions.
