968 demonstrators detained at COP15
CLIMATE: About 100,000 demonstrators participated in a mainly peacefull demonstration, marching Saturday from the Copenhagen city center to the UN Climate Conference center in the outskirts of Copenhagen.
The demonstration was masterminded by 515 organizations from 67 countries, and the march was closely watched by a massive police force.
When stones were thrown at the Danish Foreign Ministry, police forces detained a group of 968 demonstrators in a pincer trap. 964 of the detained were released a few hours later. Those still in custody have been charged with violent behavior towards officers.
At the end of the demonstration, former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, lead a candlelight vigil, one of some 3,000 set to take place in 130 countries around the world.
