Researcher interested in Danish sailors
SHIPPING: Anthropologist Adrienne Mannov, who is currently working on 3-year long research project, aims to identify how the threat of piracy is perceived by seafarers in Danish companies. She is now in contact with Danish sailors who will explain how the pirate threat affects them and their families
Adrienne Mannov stresses that she is not only interested in input from seafarers sailing in the waters off the Horn of Africa, but in all high-risk areas of the world - including West Africa.
"I would also like to talk to seafarers who have not themselves experienced pirate attacks at all, but sailing in areas where pirates operate", says Adrienne Mannov to Danish Maritime Officers (Søfartens Ledere).
As this is an anthropological study, the seafarers are not asked to fill out questionaires.
"I am negotiating with a few companies to come sail along, where I have received a lot of support for the project, but I'd love to have contact with others. And I am also interested in talking with the seafarers' families at home to take the importance of the pirate threat even further", says Adrienne Mannov.
The researcher would like to get in contact with seafarers of all ages and all levels of experience.
"I'm not afraid to climb the crane, knocking rust or to lend a hand in the galley. On the other hand, it is necessary that you are willing to let me look over the shoulder on the job, or have a confidential talk in the home period", says Adrienne Mannov.
Adrienne Mannov emphasizes that everyone who contributes are guaranteed complete anonymity. In any case both the company and the ship and employees will be obscured, so that no one can deduce who she has talked to.
