New Semco Maritime factory in Vietnam
MARITIME INDUSTRY: Semco Maritime has inaugurated its new production plant in Vietnam, and the 19 employees are currently constructing the first four modules of an accommodation platform for the oil & gas sector.
The factory is well over 2.200 square metres and is located in the port of Vung Tau at the mouth of the Mekong river. Vice President Hans-Peter Jørgensen expects the investment of well over DKK 10 million to give positive returns already within two years.
"Even though it is uphill here as well, the Southeast Asian market is not as hard hit by the economic crisis as the European market. We expect to receive positive responses to several of the quotations that we have sent out, and we are very optimistic about the possibilities", says Hans-Peter Jørgensen.
The construction of the new factory in Vietnam has proceeded as planned, and the local staff led by General director, Sigvald Vik, Semco Maritime Vietnam, and two Danish engineers are now ready to begin production.
The first phase includes accommodation modules for jack-up rigs, and rig upgrades will be performed later. On oil fields off the coast of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and in other oil producing countries in Southeast Asia, most rigs have a past in Europe and the Middle East, and the 4-man cabins need to be upgraded with additional accommodation for the permanent staff and service people.
The first project includes production of four modules, each with accommodation for eight persons.
"The establishment in Vietnam is a sign that we choose new paths, also at a difficult time. We have a great belief in the global market for accommodation modules, and we also consider rig upgrades, especially in Southeast Asia, to be an attractive market. Our activities in Vietnam give us a head start and a cost level, which make us capable of competing in the region", says CEO Steen Brødbæk, Semco Maritime
