Maersk cutting in service to North America
SHIPPING: Maersk Line is joining with one of its competitors, the French CMA CGM in establishing a new common service between the Mediterranean and North America. The new service replaces the services the shipping companies have been running separately.
Maersk Line has agreed on a Vessel Sharing Agreement (VSA) with CMA CGM. The two shipping companies will replace their services - Maersk Line's WestMed and CMA CGM's Amerigo respectively - with a new joint service, in effect by beginning of March.
Maersk Line will operate the route with four container ships, while CMA CGM contributes with a single containership. The vessels will have a capacity of 3,500 TEU on average.
"The new WestMed Service is literally the best of two worlds. We are expanding the coverage and improving reliability and transits, for thereby to service our client better", says Soren Castbak, Senior Director Product Management in Maersk Line
"We are simultaneously working actively on the current economic situation by stretching the capacity as the demand decreases", says Soren Castbak.
