Shipping Companies in Procurement Pool
SHIPPING SERVICE: A new partnership - called SeaMall - has been established to reduce member shipping companies' vessel operating cost and to afford them a competitive edge - by pooling their procurement of e.g. paints, lubri-cants, supplies and services.
The new procurement platform is to be operated out of Svendborg, Denmark, and is supported by five leading shipping companies, including Danish Groups: Clipper, DS Norden, herning shipping, Nordic Tankers and Hong Kong based Pacific Basin.
Klaus Kjærulff, former Torm CEO, has been appointed Chairman of the board of SeaMall, and is supported in the board by Knud Pontoppidan. CEO of SeaMall is Per Nykjaer Jensen - who previously founded and ran the shipping company T&C as CEO until 2003, where the company was sold to Clipper Group.
In aggregate, SeaMall´s founding partners control over 250 fully owned vessels operating in sever-al marine segments, and by pooling their purchases under major contracts, CEO Per Nykjaer Jen-sen expects both member companies and suppliers to achieve economies of scale.
"SeaMall will soon be expanded to include more shipping companies, though our first focus will be on implementing and fine-tuning our systems. With pooled purchase volumes likely to be signifi-cant and projected to grow steadily, SeaMall will become a competitive and attractive procurement platform", says chairman of the board Klaus Kjærulff.
"By including in the partnership Hong Kong based Pacific Basin and its 75 fully owned vessels, SeaMall has gained an important Asiatic extension to its platform. In the Danish maritime cluster, where the project is supported by the Danish Maritime Foundation,
SeaMall will be an important player that can help develop synergies, new opportunities and create value for the benefit of all participating companies", the chairman concludes.
