After seven months supporting science missions in the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Healy began their long trip home to Seattle in late 2011. Their plan was to return home in time for the holiday season, but fate had something different in mind.
An early storm disrupted a fuel delivery ship to the isolated town of Nome, Alaska, earlier that year. That followed by the Bering Sea freezing over earlier than normal, a potential fuel shortage was created. The crew of the cutter Healy was asked to return north, and this time to escort a fuel tanker through the rapidly thickening ice sheet.
Healy headed to Nome, followed by the Russian tanker vessel Renda, assisting in the delivery of approximately 1.3 million gallons of fuel in late January. The important mission averted the potential energy crisis, and after breaking over 300 miles back out of the ice sheet both the Healy and Renda crews returned home.
