Pirater skifter tilbage til mindre skibe

De somaliske pirater har gang på gang vist en veludviklet sans for, at tilpasse deres taktisk når forholdene ændrede sig. Det er sket nu igen, hvor de vestlige flådestyrker er blevet for dygtige til at identificere og standse store piratmoderskibe.

"Vi oplever lige nu en ændring i piraternes taktik", siger Joe Angelo, adm. direktør i Intertanko.

”Piraterne kaprer nu mindre dhows og bruger dem som moderskibe, fordi skibene vækker mindre opsigt”.

Traditionelle dhows, der anvendes af fiskere og handelsfolk i regionen, blev benyttet af piraterne inden de begyndte at bruge større moderskibe. De store moderskibe gjorde det muligt for piraterne at blive på havet i længere perioder, medbringe flere forsyninger og klare barske vejrforhold.

"Taktikken med at bruge store moderskibe er ved at blive lagt på hylden fordi mindre dhows er mere effektive. De er langt vanskeligere at identificere blandt det store antal fredelige dhows, der benyttes som fiskerbåde og til at transportere lokalt gods i området”, siger Rory Lamrock, analytiker i sikkerhedsfirmaet AKE.
