Ti procent flere piratoverfald sidste år

Det International Maritime Bureau registrerede sidste år 263 piratoverfald i verden, en stigning på 10 procent i forhold til de 239 overfald der fandt sted i 2006. Farvandet ud for Somalia og Nigeria er de farligste områder.

Det er første gang siden 2003 at antallet af piratoverfald er steget. Antallet af kapringer steg fra 14 i 2006 til 18 sidste år. 292 sømænd blev taget til fange, for 63 af dem blev der krævet en løsesum.

"Den store stigning i antallet af overfald kan føres direkte tilbage til Nigeria og Somalia. De to lande stod for hhv. 42 og 31 overfald sidste år, mod hh. 12 og 10 overfald året før", siger Potengal Mukundan, direktør for IMB til Lloyds List.

Bureauet tror på, at indsættelsen af internationale flådestyrker i området vil have en gavnlig effekt.

"Indsættelsen af internationale flådestyrker kan vise sig at være den eneste vej til at tage lysten fra de pirater, der indtil nu ikke har vist en total mangel på respekt for loven", skriver Bureauet i rapporten.
